Sunset Crater National Monument preserves the location of a cinder cone volcano in the midst of the San Francisco Volcanic Field. It was formed by a series of events over a period of 130 years (from 1064 to 1200 AD). The area surrounding the cinder cone is covered in massive lava flows and fields of cinders still black as though the volcano recently erupted. The area is seismically monitored and although scientist don't believe Sunset Crater Volcano will erupt again, they are fairly certain that another eruption will occur within the volcanic field.
